In macrobiotic healing, blood is directly related to diet, and changes in our daily way of eating can strengthen or weaken the blood. Under normal conditions, blood is produced in the intestines. Food molecules are absorbed in the villi of the small intestine and enter the bloodstream, where they change into white blood cells, plasma, and eventually red blood cells and platelets. The iron core of the blood, hemoglobin, has a construction similar to that of chlorophyll, which has magnesium at the center of the molecule instead of iron.
Through transmutation, magnesium from plant foods, in combination with oxygen circulating in the cells, changes into iron, contributing to the formation of strong blood. The intestines create white blood cells and plasma, and later with the assistance of the liver and spleen, white blood cells changes into read blood cells.
The blood is normally slightly alkaline, with a pH between 7.3 & 7.45. Acidosis results if the pH falls below this level. The body compensates by exhaling more acids during respiration and by buffer mechanisms that neutralize acids in the bloodstream, such as the conversion of hydrochloric acid into water, carbon dioxide, and other byproducts. Many foods in the modern diet are acid-produing, including meat, poultry, eggs, milk and other dairy products, sugar and other refined sweeteners, oil and oily, greasy foods, alcohol, and drugs. These foods create weaker, more acid blood, causing the lungs, kidneys, liver, spleen, heart, and other major organs to work herder to maintain an alkaline condition. In addition to chemical reactions, the bloodstream offsets acidosis by drawing upon stored minerals, including sodium, calcium, and phosphorus, in the teeth, bones, and other compact areas of the body, weakening these organs and functions in order to keep the blood slightly alkaline.
